With the Coronavirus forcing us all to stay home and only go to work if you can’t work from home, we thought it may be useful to give some tips on how you can access your work computer remotely.
We have helped some of our customers set this up and it is pretty easy to do. One thing to remember though is that you will need to install some software on your work computer before you can access it from elsewhere. So, this may mean you need to visit the office, or perhaps ask a colleague to do it for you?
To be able to access your work computer remotely, you will need some software to do it. There are lots of options ranging in price and functionality. The software we recommend and use ourselves is Splashtop.
The following link is our affiliate link, but just visit splashtop.com if you don’t want to use our affiliate link.
Firstly, you will need to create an account with Splashtop, and then sign up for a package. Their ‘Business Access Solo’ package costs $60 per year (about £48.60 at the time of writing) and allows you to connect to up to 2 computers remotely. This package will suit most people and is very cheap compared to some of the competitors.
On Your Computer At Work…
After signing up you can create a deployment package which is what you will install on your work computer. This is also known as Splashtop Streamer and is the software which needs to be running on your work computer to allow you to connect from elsewhere. It is also important to remember to leave you work computer on all the time as if it is off you will not be able to access it remotely. When installing the software on your work computer make sure you tick the box which makes the software start when the computer starts.
On Your Home Computer/Laptop…
After installing Splashtop on your work computer, you then need to install it on your home computer or laptop. If you log into the Splashtop website you can download and install the Business App. Once installed, run it and log in with the credentials created when you signed up for your Splashtop account. Once logged in you should see your work computer listed and simply double clicking on it should start a remote session.
And that should be it! The setup can be a bit painful as with any software but once it’s done accessing your work computer is easy, and it hopefully means you can work from home and stay safe!
If you need any help with the setup please feel free to email us at email@example.com and we’ll do what we can to help.
Take care everyone!
